Havenwood, Vermont. 1987. A twelve-year-old boy named Leo Alderman catalogues the world with the methodical attention of someone who believes the world rewards close observation.
He has read everything the travelling library carries. He keeps notebooks full of questions that cannot be answered. He does not find this frightening. He finds it interesting.
"Not ours to know" felt not like a door closing but like one left ajar, with interesting cold air coming through it.

August, 1987. A mile and a half into the woods behind Havenwood. A change in the quality of the air — a stillness too complete, as if the background noise of the forest had dialled itself down by a fraction.
"Smooth and dark as polished obsidian, no seam he could see from here, no rivet, no mark of human making. It sat with the absolute stillness of a thing that had always been there."
Inside: communication not in language, but in a mode more precise than language, more direct, less prone to the losses that occurred in translation. The ship taught him mathematics first — not as instruction, but as revelation.

The travelling library came to Havenwood on the second Tuesday of every month, and Leo Alderman had read everything in it.
He had read the encyclopaedias first — all twelve volumes, in order — and then the science books, and then the history books, and then the novels, and then the books about other places, and then, when he had run out of those, he had started again from the beginning, because the second time through you noticed things you had missed.
His father said this was unusual. His teacher, Mrs. Hartley, said it was a gift. Leo himself did not think of it as either. He thought of it as a reasonable response to the fact that the world was interesting and there was a great deal he did not yet understand.
The questions he could not answer did not frustrate him. They felt, instead, like doors. "Not ours to know" felt not like a door closing but like one left ajar, with interesting cold air coming through it.

The data didn't answer anything. It just kept opening doors. Each one led to a room with another door in it. Seventeen tests. Forty years. One physicist who refused to stop following the evidence — wherever it led.
The data pointed somewhere unexpected. Not a flaw in the instruments. Not a gap in the methodology. Something else entirely — something that had no name in any existing framework.
The further the mathematics went, the stranger the territory became. What had seemed like solid ground turned out to be something more like a surface. And surfaces, by definition, have a beneath.
The observer problem had always been treated as a measurement problem. A technical inconvenience. But what if it wasn't? What if the question it was pointing at had been there all along, waiting to be asked properly?
Forty years of evidence. Eight years of mathematics. One final sentence. Dr. Sarah Chen set down her pen in a Vermont farmhouse and did not pick it up again.

Physics has a problem it doesn't like to talk about. It has been there since the beginning of quantum mechanics, sitting quietly in the foundations, waiting for someone to take it seriously.
Dr. Sarah Chen took it seriously. What she found at the bottom of it is the reason the book exists. The reason you're here. The reason the data pointed somewhere no one expected it to go.
Every map has edges.
Better instruments extend the map. They do not explain the mapmaker.
The hard problem is not a problem of measurement.
It is a problem of what is doing the measuring.

THE STORY CONTINUES
Book 1 ended with a sentence. Book 2 begins with a signal.
A team of physicists buried 400 metres beneath the Swiss Jura mountains has spent six years building something. On February 19, 2036, they find out whether it works.
